Exactly how to attend a wedding in 2024.
Plus, the great debate, the role of a bridesmaid, one of the best true crime series ever made and Holly's new celebrity obsession. Here's everything you might've missed from your favourite podcast.
Hiii Outlouders, Em Vernem here 🙋🏾♀️
Well… not much to say here, it’s been a bit of a quiet week (*read in a sarcastic tone). Our hosts had their work cut out for them with the added challenge of navigating the debate timings, recording remotely and the ongoing breaking news cycle that just wouldn’t stop breaking.
In other words, an outlouder kindly outlined everything they wanted to be covered, and I must admit, the Outloud team did in fact deliver.
Tick, tick, tick, and tick. ✅
Make sure you’re all caught up by listening to this week’s episodes via your podcast app.
Weekly Reccos 📺 📖 🎧
Here’s what our Out Loud hosts suggest we should buy, watch and read.
Holly wants you to buy
Two foundations. The first one is around $50 and you can pick it up at Chemist Warehouse — It’s called serum foundation by Mavala.
The second foundation is the bareMinerals complexion rescue skin perfecting tint that you can get from Mecca.
“They’re the perfect mix of making you glowy and even.”
But wait… I’m adding in another recco for Hol that was also her “best” of the week.
It was this video that David Beckham posted on his Instagram (you’ll understand why it was her best when you watch it).
Our social producer Dolph also made this, which is literal perfection:
Jessie wants you to watch
The Jinx on Binge. It’s a true crime series where a dismembered body is found in a river. The key suspect is a man named Bob Durst who is a multi-millionaire and heir to a real estate company in New York. It’s two seasons that are nine years apart with the second season uncovering new evidence.
“It's widely considered to be one of the best true crime series ever made.”
I (Em) wants you to read
Lies & Weddings by Kevin Kwan. I was lucky enough to fill in on Friday’s show which meant that I got to take part in the weekly reccos (happy for me, unfortunate for you (only joking (kinda))).
I read this book in one day as a holiday read. If you’ve read Crazy Rich Asians, think about the wealth described in that book and times it by 10. It’s so descriptive and beautiful and funny and there’s a hectic death scene that isn’t a spoiler because it happens on page one. Please have a read because I need to talk about it with someone.
So? Come on, tell us! Did we nail this week’s reccos? Let us know what you think by clicking the button below.
DW, we’ve got you covered. 👩💻
My colleagues and fellow journalists here at Mamamia HQ have been typing like the tips of their fingers are on fire. Why? Well because we had a lot to talk about this week. Check out these reads if you haven’t already.
Dave Grohl said he's fighting for his marriage. New documents suggest otherwise.
Hours after Kate gave a health update, Meghan and Harry have stirred up drama.
The one detail we missed in Kate Middleton's 'cancer free' video.
The great debate 👀
Do you want to know everything that happened at the presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, but there’s so much information out there and it’s super confusing and you don’t know what’s fact, what’s meme and why is everyone talking about eating pets? Don’t worry— Same.
Well, I’ve got good news, you don’t have to do a thing because Mia, Holly and Jessie did it for us. They watched the debate on Wednesday and gave us all the information we needed to form our thoughts and opinions and sound smart in our group chats. Take a listen!
🎧 Listen: The debate debrief starts at the 6:43 mark.
But wait there’s more…
As promised, we’re doing special election explanation episodes with Amelia Lester, the executive editor of Foreign Policy magazine.
On Thursday, Amelia, Mia and Holly dove even deeper into the debate, discussing who they thought won, the story behind Trump and Harris’ handshake, the analysis of their discussion points, the jabs you might’ve missed and their honest thoughts on that Taylor Swift post (it’s honestly a debate in itself). Have a listen!
Do you have a question you want Amelia to answer in the next episode? You can leave a comment, post it in the Outlouders Facebook Group or email it through at outloud@mamaia.com.au
To bridesmaid or not to bridesmaid? 👰♀️
On Tuesday’s show, Holly, Jessie and myself talked about how gen Z women are saying “no” when being asked if they want to be a bridesmaid. Apparently this is not a question other generations thought you had a choice in?
Well, we broke down what being a bridesmaid entails for each generation as well as some highly contentious wedding etiquette guidelines.
We also talked about how much money we put into the wishing well. I said that I give between $150-$200 and according to Jessie and Holly… I’m wrong.
If you want to hear our little throwdown AND find out how much money Holly and Jessie think you should give the newlyweds, have a listen to the episode.
We just know that you have a friend that can relate to this conversation. Share this with them (and then tell us what they said 👀).
Quiz time 🤔
