Is it weird to be best friends with your kids?
A new memoir, a calming YouTube channel, two surprise special guests and the pressure of having friends, here's everything that we talked about on your favourite podcast this week.
Hiii Outlouders, Em Vernem here 🙋🏾♀️
On Monday’s show, Mia, Holly and Jessie talked about Angelina Jolie having no friends and whether or not it’s a problem.
Jolie also said that her children are her friends, and as someone who deeply relates to that statement, I have something I’d like to share with the group.
Before I roll my sleeves up, let’s get into the weekly reccos.
Weekly Reccos 📺 📖 🎧
Here’s what our Out Loud hosts suggest we should read and watch.
The group (but mainly Holly) wants you to watch
Blink Twice in cinemas. Direced by Zoë Kravitz and starring Naomi Ackie and Channing Tatum, it’s about two young women who go to an island that’s owned by a charismatic but possibly sinister billionaire. There are other men and women there and it appears that they’re all having a great time but then it appears that nope, they’re definitely not.
“The lead is a British actress called Naomi Ackie. She is amazing. We loved it.”
Mia wants you your dog to watch
Dog TV on YouTube. Each video is around 12 or 24 hours long. You put it on, and the videos are meant to keep your dogs calm when you're not home. Mia however, has been utilising Dog TV for when she’s babysitting Luna.
It’s also great to have on in the background if you’re working and you want something on that’s calming.
“Luna was looking at it for a bit, and then my dog started looking at it and got really into it.”
Jessie wants you to read
All I ever wanted was to be hot by Lucinda Price (AKA Froomes). It’s a memoir and Froomes writes about recovering from an eating disorder and what it’s like to then inhabit a different body. She’s also done a really innovative and exciting clinical trial.
“The millennial and Gen Z experience captured in this was so refreshing.”

A few weeks ago, we talked about… this:
You can read about it here.
On the podcast, Mia shared that she also filmed herself getting her Mirena inserted. Due to high demand, we rummaged through the Mamamia archives. I am happy to announce that we have tacked down the video. Happy viewing!
🎧 Listen to the full conversation if you haven’t already. The segments starts at the 1:22 mark.
Yes, my mum is my best friend. No it’s not weird.
I’m lucky to have really close female friendships but I can easily say that the closet friendship I have, is with someone who’s 29 years older than me. No it’s not Leonardo DiCaprio — it’s my mum.
The minute I turned 18, my relationship changed with my mother. It might’ve been a sudden maturity, it might’ve been that I could have a drink with her, it might’ve been a feeling of “letting go”. We both agree that when I turned 18, our relationship became stronger and transformed into a friendship.
Yes, she’s still my parent and occassionaly isn’t afraid to tell me what to do, but there’s a level of excitement and relief whenever I know that I’m going to be seeing her — Something that I never had when I was a child.
She’s my person. She’s the one I want to go travelling with, the one I want to have dinner with, the one who I want to be there when I’m ill or upset or lost.
When Angelina Jolie said that her children are her friends, I completely understood. It’s a relationship that’s so complicated and rare but when you know you have it, you don’t feel embarrassed about saying it out loud.
Unlike J.D. Vance, I’m telling you right now that my mum being my best friend is not weird.
On Monday, Mia, Holly and Jessie talked about how our friendships impact not just ourselves, but our family units as well. Take a listen!
🎧 The segment starts at the 4:42 mark.
The best comment award goes to…
If you’re wondering why Luca is suddenly the fourth chair of the podcast (I’m personally offended), it’ll all make sense if you’ve listend to Monday’s show. Warning: This episode is extra spicy 🌶️
The (Luca addition) segment starts at the 40:56 mark.
That IS the best comment!!! But I can’t be the only one who think Luca has married a version of his mum!!! Luca & Jessie’s dynamic sounds SO similar to Mia & Jason’s.
I don’t know if it’s because my eldest kids are boys but they aren’t my best friends. Are we close? Yes. Do we have great relationships? Yes. But I don’t even know if I’d say they were my friends. My youngest child is my only daughter & shes 10 so I wonder if your relationship will be different.
