Hiii Outlouders, Em Vernem here 🙋🏾♀️
I was lucky enough to fill in on the Monday, Tuesday and Thursday episodes of the pod and to be honest, I’m all yapped out… JK I don’t think it’s possible for me to ever shut up. The episode I wasn’t on was Friday and I was getting major FOMO so I forced Mia, Holly and Jessie to let me share a little snippet of a dating experience. I’ve talked about it more further down in this newsy, but before I get ahead of myself, let’s kick off with the weekly reccos.
Weekly Reccos 📺 📖 🎧
Here’s what our MMOL hosts suggest you should read, eat, and watch this weekend.
Mia wants you to listen to
Chappell Roan. Mia’s been listening to her discography and has become obsessed with her song Femininomenon which she released a couple of years ago.
She’s that type of aesthetic with Charlie XCX where it’s like… scary sexy. Very much not appealing to the male gaze. Her aesthetic is drag queen and she’s incredibly cool.
You might know her from her viral tagline “I’m your favourite artist’s favourite artist.” Her album is called The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. Get it in your ears!
Jessie wants you to watch
Presumed Innocent on Apple TV. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal and it’s a suspense, thriller, legal series.
Gyllenhaal plays a prosecutor whose colleague and fellow prosecutor has been murdered in a way that resembles a case they used to work on. As the story unfolds, we learn why this is one crime he can’t investigate. There are eight episodes in total, each one between 40-50 minutes.
Jake Gyllenhaal is a brilliant actor. When you watch his performance in this, we forgive him for what he did to Taylor Swift.
Holly wants you to watch
Under The Banner of Heaven on SBS Demand. Set in Utah in 1984 and starring Andrew Garfield, Daisy Edgar Jones and Sam Worthington, the show is based on the true story of a murder committed within a religious community. Jones’ character is the victim of said murder in a serene suburb that’s hiding a family’s secret history. An amazing insight into the world of Mormonism.
It’s about what happens when women within that religion start challenging it.

The woman who knows Gen X women deserve better sex. And how to get it.
By Holly
Just not feeling it at the moment.
Completely touched-out.
Don't care if it never happens again
Hormones snatching libidos, responsibilities crowding out pleasure.
Body feeling like a hostile stranger.
If you ask enough midlife women about how sexy they feel, you'll get a lot of laughs.
For some, the literal act of it seems comical, silly somehow. What was once sexy now seems ridiculous, now that we're all so… different.
For others, the idea that pleasure would be a priority with so much else crowding out their lives just seems far-fetched.
Many say that they love their partners but they can't bear to be touched by them any more.
That the part of themselves that used to want to have sex - in the morning, every night, in the afternoon with weakening light streaming in across a tousled bed — feels like someone else entirely.
And behind the laughter, when you ask midlife women about sex, there can be a lot of sadness. Because sex can be all caught up in who you are, who you were, and how valuable, desirable and loved you feel this new you is… Continue reading.

Was there a topic this week that you want more of? Well, the good news is that we’ve got you covered. Soak up these gems:
In 2021, Meghan Markle experienced suicidal thoughts. Now she says this just 'scraped the surface'.
The men who would be vice president offer two completely different views of women.
'I'm in a mixed phone relationship and it's ruining my life.'
15 delightful (and deranged) things that happened at the Paris Olympics.
The Olsen twins designed this season’s It shoe. People want them pulled from shelves.
What you said 📣
On Monday’s show we talked about the celebrity men who like women (please have a listen for context before you yell at me). Some mentions included George Clooney, Glen Powell and Ryan Gosling and I’ve been kicking myself for not talking about some of the great celebs that were flagged in the Outlouders’ Facebook group that we missed. Here are some of your additions:
“Just listened to today’s episode and I have one more male celebrity that likes women (and women like him back), Pedro Pascal. He’s probably the most approachable, non-toxic man that Hollywood has ever seen. The way female actors that have worked with him approach him on red carpet events is so candid and familiar. That says it all.” - Maca
“Weirdly Clooney likes women but he always works with men who don’t.” - Alex
“Andrew Garfield was the first one that came to my mind.” - Tarni
If you have no idea what we’re talking about, have a listen to Monday’s episode. The men who like women segment starts at the 37:12 mark.
That time I dated a guy who had an android…
By me (Em Vernem)
On Friday’s show, I snuck my way into the studio to talk about a guy I dated who had an android phone.
Why?
Well, the whole conversation was about being in a mixed phone relationship. The most common forms is when one of you has an android and the other has an iPhone.
Both Mia and Jessie are in a mixed phone relationship and although they don’t think it makes a difference, there are some things that cause a little bump in the road. Airdropping, trying to use each other’s phone while the other person is driving, needing different charging cables (if you have an older iPhone) and… texting with blue bubbles.
If you have iMessage on, a feature only iPhone users have, texts between you and the person you’re messaging come up in a blue bubble. You’re also able to form group chats with other people who also have iPhones.
Android users don’t have iMessage, so their texts come up in green bubbles (gross). And they have to lean on other platforms for their group messaging.
I once matched with a guy on a dating app and when we both confirmed that we wanted to see each other, we moved our conversation over to texts.
And then I saw it… The heinous green bubble.
“Oh, do you have an android?” I asked.
“I do… Is that a red flag?” He replied.
“No, hahaha,” I lied.
“Okay, good because the last two girls who found out I had an android ghosted me.”
I thought ghosting was a wild and extremely rude action to take just because someone has opted for a different mobile software than you but the android vs iPhone lore is apparently a huge thing in dating.
I dated this person for a few months and no, we didn’t breakup over phone differences but every single time someone found out he had an android, they wouldn’t even attempt to hide their disgust.
I don’t buy into the whole “android sucks” narrative but I do think that nothing is uglier than those green text bubbles.
If you want to hear this full phone chat listen to Friday’s episode. The segment starts at the 2:20 mark.
I have some good news for Midders! This week we kicked off season two of MID, hosted by our very own, Holly Wainwright.
Episode one is a very NSFW chat about sex that you won’t want to miss (trust me). Hol speaks to author and advocate Leslie Morgan about what women really mean when they say they no longer care about sex and how it feels to have the best sex of your life after 50 👀.
Mia’s trying a new food 👀
On Tuesday’s episode we talked about Mia’s ADHD food revelation.
It’s called food hyperfixation which is a common symptom of the condition involving a particular meal that you will eat every day, over and over again until you’re er, over it. For Mia, that was peanut butter toast. And now she doesn’t care for it anymore.
She’s currently in food limbo as she figures out her next go-to lunch. Have a guess at what she’s trying right now and then scroll down to see the answer.
