Hiii Outlouders, Em Vernem here 🙋🏾♀️
Listen, I just have to show you something that I can’t stop thinking about.
If you’ve listened to Friday’s episode (what a silly goose, of course you have!), you’ll know that Mia’s ‘worst’ of the week was getting a new photo done for her driver’s licence. It was early in the morning so she opted for a more ‘natural’ look which, as someone who paid $20 for her passport photo to be touched up, I was not on board with. However, I respect the desire to have a photo that’s authentically you.
Anyway… in a move that shocked no one, Mia hated it.
“I recoiled. I think I need to put this in the bin and get another one. And is that just too vain? Because it is so upsetting.”
She asked that I include said photo to get Outlouders’ thoughts (and I always follow instructions) so here it is in all its glory. Mia also added a comparison with a scene from the new film Substance which might be accurate, might be an overreaction. You decide in our poll below. 🍿
But wait… I have another behind-the-scenes little treat for you. Jessie’s ‘best’ of the week was Mia’s birthday for which she decided to make a cake. Not just any cake but Mia’s favourite one of all time. You can find the recipe here.
Outlouders, something went wrong in the process. There *may* have been ingredients left out. According to Jessie, “It kinda looked like a brownie but tasted like… dirt.”
While listeners to the pod were left on a cliff-hanger as to what the cake actually looked like, you, my newsletter friends, get to see it in all its er… glory. Please note the touching message on top. The rules are, you have to help us figure out what went wrong with Jessie’s culinary masterpiece by leaving a comment below.
🎧 Listen to Mia, Holly & Jessie talk about their best and worsts of the week on Friday’s show.
Weekly Reccos 📺 📖 🎧
Here’s what our Out Loud hosts suggest we watch, read and listen to.
Mia wants you to watch and wear
Copenhagen street style. It’s a particular style of fashion that comes out of…Copenhagen.
“It’s comfortable, it’s a bit quirky and it sparks joy.”
There’s a lot of colour and interesting textures and it’s a bit miss-matchy which sounds remarkably like someone we all know. Mia has replaced doom scrolling with searching YouTube for ‘Copenhagen street style’ so she can basically just people-watch in the Danish city.
Holly wants you to watch
Nobody Wants This on Netflix. It’s a romantic-comedy series about a sex and dating podcaster Joanne (played by Kristen Bell) and a newly single rabbi (played by Adam Brody) falling in love. The series explores whether or not their relationship can survive their very different lifestyles.
“It is the most delightful, silly show. The episodes are all short, which makes me happy. The chemistry is amazing, and I love it.”
Jessie wants you to watch
Into The Fire: The Lost Daughter on Netflix. This two-part documentary is produced by Charlize Theron and follows the story of Cathy, a mum who unravels the mystery surrounding the 1989 disappearance of her daughter who she put up for adoption.
“It's one of those documentaries where you're sitting there and you just gasp. The twists in the first episode are amazing.”

Want to know what happens behind the scenes of the podcast? Well… a whole lot of making fun of Holly everytime her cough interrupts the recording sessions. This time, we have proof. Enjoy!
Your election explanation.
Due to popular demand, we’re continuing our special election explanation series with deputy editor of Foreign Policy magazine, Amelia Lester.
On Thursday’s show, Amelia, Holly and Mia broke down the vice presidential debate and unpacked the moments that everyone is talking about. I personally want a full video of Tim Waltz’s facial expressions every time J. D. Vance avoided a question.
The cheat codes for life.
On Friday’s show, Mia, Holly and Jessie talked about cheat codes and hacks that make life that little bit easier.
In the Outlouders Facebook group, Jessie asked you for your hacks, and my God, did you deliver.
Here are some of our faves…
“Don't fold kids’ clothes, just chuck them into tubs in their wardrobe.”
“When we went away, we gave the kids 10 $1 coins and if they misbehaved in the car they got $1 taken off them. When we got to our destination, they had the money left to spend on whatever they wanted. Only ever took $2 in years. Made car travel super enjoyable.”
“Every night, when having my in-bed-scrolly-time, I search the day’s date in my camera roll and delete any photos/screenshots I no longer want or need. Takes two minutes and helps combat storage problems.”
“On Sunday nights, I prep all the veggies for the week. It saves time and effort every night and we eat more veggies as it makes it so much easier.”
“Keep a refillable sponge stick thingo in the shower with half vinegar, half dish washing liquid. Use it to clean the shower while you shower/when you notice it needs it.”
What are your cheat codes for life? Tell us in the comments.
I actually have a comment re the drivers license photo. I just think it actually has Mia looking older, maybe age 70, and I think she needs to know she actually doesn’t really look like that - makeup or natural. Also the link to the cake recipe did not seem to work.
Jessie, if you don't have self raising flour put a teaspoon of baking powder in with a cup of plain flour and it does the same job.
